PROMOTE Smart Growth
Issues
Our sidewalks are deteriorating and there are major gaps in the Village. Many areas lack sidewalks and trails to provide a safe route for those that walk and bicycle. A plan to address these issues and connect the Village to the Zim Smith trail is underway. Ben and Shawn will ensure that the plans developed by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan and Linkage Study get implemented.
Cars, buses and trucks are increasingly using neighborhood streets as cut throughs to avoid Route 50. Volume is increasing and vehicles are ignoring speed limits and no trucks signs. During the morning commute cars are not stopping for school buses. Enforcement needs to increase but it is not the sole solution. Many communities have developed strategies for traffic control including striping, curb placement, narrowing, etc. that are proven to increase safety. Ben and Shawn will work with police to increase enforcement and will explore successful strategies used by other communities to address public safety.
Many seniors and disabled individuals live in the Village because they can walk or access public transportation. The Village of Ballston Spa should strive to be an age friendly community with a commitment to actively work toward making the Village a great place for people of all ages. AARP has compiled examples from around the US for communities to explore. Improvements could include providing convenient handicap parking, smooth sidewalks, bus shelters, better lighting and accessibility wherever possible. Our seniors deserve to remain in our community for as long as possible.
